On September 24, 2020, IRCC announced that measures are being taken to speed up spousal application processing.
The news is welcome to thousands of couples who have remained apart due to complications posed by COVID-19. Throughout the pandemic, many families have publicly pleaded for IRCC to speed up this process, even launching a Twitter campaign #FamilySponsorshipMatters and creating groups on Facebook to raise awareness of these delays.
IRCC has stated that it increased the number of decision makers for these applications by 66% to speed up processing and reduce couples’ wait times. With that pace, IRCC estimates that it will decide 49,000 decisions before 2021.
