Today the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada announced that significant improvements have been made to the wait times for sponsoring foreign spouses.
The government estimates that for the majority of cases, the average wait time for a spousal sponsorship application is one year. This has cut the wait time in half.
The Liberals first identified the spousal sponsorship backlog problem in December 2016. At its worst, the backlog consisted of approximately 75,000 applications, which have been reduced to around 15,000.
These recent changes to the spousal sponsorship program were in response to moves made by the previous government in response to an increase in marriage fraud cases.
